Acting Masterclass with Professor Vera J. Katz

Ages 14-18  |  Level: Advanced

 

All of the elements of the actor’s craft are taught in this class: technique, scene study, script analysis, character development, monologue, breaking down your acting through song, & more. As Professor Katz teaches each element, you will put it into action in order to see the practical application of the concept at work. You will learn the whys and the hows of the actor’s craft. You will develop the ultimate actor’s toolbox that you will be able to draw from when you are developing a character for a stage or screen. This is a unique and outstanding learning opportunity that will yield extraordinary results. Students should come prepared with a 1-2 minute contemporary monologue.

 

Appearance: Students are required to dress appropriately for movement. Wear dance shoes or sneakers secured with laces or velcro. No open-toe shoes, flip-flops, sandals, or crocs. Hair must be pulled back and away from the face.

 

AGES: 14-18 (Level: Advanced)

TUITION: $275.00 (with current annual registration)

WHEN: 1:00-3:00 p.m.; Saturdays; April 20, and 27, 2024. Students must attend both classes.

TEACHING ARTISTS: Professor Vera J. Katz

Professor, academic career spans 32 years in theater department at Howard University, 22 years at Duke Ellington School of the Arts, Washington DC.


Vera J. Katz, a professor emerita in the theatre arts department at Howard University, has taught acting and directing for 32 years.  For the past 22 years, she had also been a member of the Duke Ellington School of the Arts.  She has directed more than 50 productions, originally working with Joe Hyman, who produced the famed playwright-director-author, Moss Hart, on Broadway.

 

She has taught such notables as Debbie Allen, Anthony Anderson, Chadwick Boseman, Corey Hawkins, Taraji P. Henson, Isaiah Johnson, Jayme Lawson, Phylicia Rashad, Wendy Raquel Robinson, Fredericka Whitfield, Lynn Whitfield, and Isaiah Washington.

 

She is the author of A Katz Walk: A Toolbox of Techniques for Actors and Directors, with a foreword by Phylicia Rashad. The book is her contribution to the artistic disciplines of acting and directing, especially as it relates to the strengths of the Black Experience.

 

She's taught featured workshops in acting  and directing for the past six years at the National Black Theatre Festival in Winston-Salem.
